Why family portraits of teenagers are so important | Outdoor Family Photographer

As I drove away from this session I felt an overwhelming feeling of hope, happiness, relief and an excitement for the years ahead with my own family. I was blown away as I witnessed just how much these teenage children immersed themselves into a photo session with me filled with acts of kindness, respect and support for their parents and each other. Their humour and understanding of each others sarcasm and whit brought their relationship together to another level, one that I am now excited about and looking forward to.
As I am entering into the “teenage years” with my own children I am hopeful for this chapter, after always feeling fearful that our connection as a family would suffer. The voices in my head getting louder and louder “Oh, wait until they are teenagers then you will know all about it!”
When this beautiful Mom received her images she told me that I had captured them in ways that she never could. She informed me that the framed image would soon be sitting pride of place as one of her children had now gone to live abroad and how delighted she was that she had a portrait of them all together as a family. Something that may not happen again for some time.
I am passionate about this stage of family life as I understand it’s importance. As I witnessed my own Mom and more recently a close friend experience the ‘Empty Nest Syndrome’ I want to encourage all parents to embrace this beautiful stage of life with their teen children. Capture the braces, the imperfections of these transitional years and all the details and emotions that come with it. Invest in photos that capture your relationship with your teen and all that makes them unique. You will be so glad you did!
